What IT Roles Pay

In the US, help desk and IT support roles are commonly advertised between $45,000 and $60,000, systems and network administrators around $70,000 to $95,000, and cloud or DevOps engineers frequently above $110,000.

In the UK, first-line support commonly starts around £22,000 to £28,000, second and third line £30,000 to £45,000, and cloud and infrastructure engineers £55,000 upwards. In Pakistan, IT support roles commonly run PKR 60,000 to 150,000 a month, with cloud and DevOps roles at international firms considerably higher.

Certifications Employers Filter On

For entry-level support, CompTIA A+ and Network+ still do real work on a CV, and Microsoft 365 and Azure fundamentals certificates are cheap and widely recognised. These matter most when you have little experience to point at.

Higher up, the useful ones narrow: AWS Solutions Architect, Azure Administrator, Cisco CCNA for networking, and security certifications such as Security+ or CISSP for that track. Employers care about the associate and professional levels far more than the entry ones once you have two or three years behind you.

The Service Desk Is Not a Dead End

Most infrastructure and cloud engineers started on a service desk, and hiring managers know it. What separates the people who move on is documenting what they fixed and automating what they repeated — a support engineer who writes PowerShell or Bash scripts to close tickets is already halfway to the next role.

Ticketing systems, Active Directory, Microsoft 365 administration and basic networking are the four areas that show up in nearly every progression job spec. Being demonstrably solid on those beats being vaguely familiar with ten technologies.

Remote and Sponsored IT Work

IT is one of the genuinely remote-friendly fields, though infrastructure roles with physical hardware responsibilities are usually hybrid at best. Support roles serving another timezone will mean shift work.

IT is also one of the sectors where visa sponsorship is realistic, because senior technical roles meet the skill and salary thresholds that most occupations fail. That applies to engineering and architecture positions rather than first-line support.
