Online Work — Freelance and Remote Roles Paid from Abroad

Foreign clients, freelance platforms and remote-first employers hire people in Pakistan for writing, design, development, marketing, support and administrative work. It is some of the most accessible paid work in the country, and some of the easiest to misprice, because the platform fee, the payment route and the tax rate all come out of the headline figure.

What the work involves

Delivering projects or hours for clients abroad, either through a marketplace such as Fiverr or Upwork or as an employee of a remote company; agreeing scope, deadlines and payment terms in writing; and receiving foreign currency into a Pakistani bank account.

Requirements

• A skill a client will pay for, with a portfolio or work samples to prove it
• Reliable internet, a computer and a backup power plan
• Written English good enough to agree scope and handle revisions
• A CNIC and a bank account able to receive foreign remittances — PayPal does not serve Pakistan
• For IT and IT-enabled services, registration with the Pakistan Software Export Board to be taxed at the lower rate

What comes off the top

• Platform fee. Fiverr's commission is 20 per cent of the order amount; Upwork's freelancer service fee is 0 to 15 per cent per contract
• Tax on export proceeds. 0.25 per cent for PSEB-registered IT and IT-enabled services exporters and 1 per cent otherwise, doubled for anyone not on the Active Taxpayers' List
• Conversion. Freelancers may keep 50 per cent of export proceeds or USD 5,000 a month, whichever is higher, in a foreign currency account

Before you apply

Price the work after the fee and the tax, not before. A 100-dollar Fiverr order pays 80 dollars before tax, and nobody genuine will ask you to pay a deposit to unlock tasks or release earnings.
