Microsoft Azure is the second major cloud platform in the United States and the first one in a great many of the organisations most likely to hire you: banks, insurers, health systems, manufacturers, universities and government contractors that were Microsoft customers long before any of this moved to the cloud. That shapes the work, and it shapes two things about these job advertisements that nobody warns you about — what the published salary figures are worth, and how much of the job is not engineering at all.
If you are still choosing a platform, our cloud engineer jobs in USA guide covers the occupation as a whole and our AWS cloud engineer guide covers the other side. This page assumes you have picked Azure.
Two National Averages, $23,981 Apart
Here is the state of published salary data for this exact job title. Glassdoor puts the average Azure cloud engineer salary at $169,202 a year. Salary.com puts it at $145,221.
Those are both described as national averages for the same title, and they are $23,981 apart — a gap wider than the entire distance between the median network administrator and the median network architect in the federal wage data. Both cannot be right, and the disagreement is the finding.
It happens because neither is a measurement. Both are models built on self-reported submissions, and they differ in who submits, which job titles get folded in, and how seniority is weighted. Quote either at an interview and you are quoting a sample of strangers, not a market rate.
The measured figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which has no cloud engineer occupation. The work is counted under three:
- Network and computer systems administrators — a $99,130 median, the lowest tenth under $62,640 and the highest tenth above $155,050.
- Computer network architects — a $134,050 median, the highest tenth above $202,680.
- Software developers — a $135,980 median, the highest tenth above $214,670.
That also gives the entry-level figure some meaning. Junior Azure roles are advertised from around $79,800, often with a cost-of-living adjustment for Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington DC. Against a tenth percentile of $62,640 for the administrator occupation, that is a sound starting number rather than a disappointing one — it is above the bottom of the band the work is counted in.
The M365 Question That Decides What Job You Took
This is the single most useful thing to know about the Azure market, and it is visible in the job titles themselves. You will constantly see postings like "Cloud Engineer (Azure / M365 / Infrastructure)" and "Cloud & Systems Administrator, Azure focus".
Those titles are describing at least two different jobs, and the ratio between them is not in the advertisement.
Microsoft 365 tenant administration — licences, mailboxes, Teams policies, SharePoint permissions, user support escalations — is real work that organisations genuinely need. It is also, on every wage table that exists, administration rather than engineering, and it sits at the $99,130 end of the range rather than the $134,050 end. This bundling happens on Azure far more than on AWS, for the obvious reason: the same vendor sells both, so the same team ends up owning both.
Two consequences worth planning around.
It sets your pay band. A role that is 70 per cent tenant administration will be priced as administration no matter what the title says, and the published averages above will feel wildly optimistic when your offer arrives.
It sets what you can do next. Three years of M365 administration is a weaker platform for reaching an architecture role than three years of infrastructure design, because the interview for the next job asks what you designed and why. This is the mechanism behind the career ladder every Azure guide describes — junior engineer to engineer to senior to architect — quietly stalling for people who never got the infrastructure half.
The fix costs one question. Ask, in the first interview, what proportion of the week is Microsoft 365 administration and user support versus infrastructure design and automation. It is an entirely reasonable question, the answer is usually honest, and it tells you more about the offer than any salary survey will.
The AZ Certifications Are Not a Flat List
Azure guides list four exams as though you could pick any of them: AZ-104, AZ-400, AZ-305 and AZ-500. You cannot, and Microsoft enforces the order.
- AZ-104 — Azure Administrator Associate. The foundation of the whole path and, in practice, the one most Azure postings actually name. No prerequisite.
- AZ-500 — Azure Security Engineer Associate. Also associate level, no prerequisite certification. The security specialisation.
- AZ-305 — Azure Solutions Architect Expert. Requires the Azure Administrator Associate certification first. Microsoft will not award the Expert credential without it.
- AZ-400 — DevOps Engineer Expert. Requires either the Azure Administrator Associate or the Azure Developer Associate.
So the real sequence for an infrastructure career is AZ-104 first, then AZ-305 if you are heading towards architecture, AZ-400 if you are heading towards delivery, or AZ-500 if you are heading towards security. That is two exams and a real gap of experience between them, not a shopping list you work through in a quarter.
This is worth knowing because it is not how every vendor works. AWS removed its exam prerequisites in 2018, so nothing there stops you booking a Professional paper on day one — a different problem with the same root. Kubernetes goes the other way and gates CKS behind an active CKA, as covered in our cybersecurity engineer guide. Treat any course selling an "Azure architect certification" without mentioning AZ-104 as a signal about the course.
Hybrid Is the Job, Not a Bonus Skill
Azure postings mention hybrid environments so routinely that it stops registering. It should register, because it is the substantive difference between this work and a greenfield cloud role.
Azure wins in organisations that already ran Windows Server, Active Directory and Exchange. Those organisations did not switch off their data centres; they connected them. So the Azure engineer's job is disproportionately about the seam: identity synchronised between on-premise Active Directory and Entra ID, networks joined over site-to-site VPN or ExpressRoute, applications that will not be rewritten, and compliance requirements written before any of this existed.
That seam is where the difficulty lives and where the interviews go. Someone who can explain hybrid identity and conditional access clearly will out-interview someone with broader but purely cloud-native experience, in this market specifically. Our network engineer guide covers the networking half of that seam.
Entra ID Is the Skill Hiding in Plain Sight
Listings say "Azure AD" or "Entra ID" in a line of bullet points and move on. In practice, identity is the highest-leverage thing on an Azure engineer's CV, for two reasons.
It is where the incidents come from. Misconfigured conditional access, over-permissioned service principals and stale guest accounts cause a large share of what goes wrong in Microsoft estates, which is why security interviews probe it hard.
And it is where Azure differs most from its competitor. Someone with strong AWS IAM can learn Azure compute quickly; hybrid identity, with an on-premise directory synchronised into the cloud one, has no real AWS equivalent to transfer from. It is a genuine specialism and it is priced like one.
The Roles You Will Actually Meet
- Azure Cloud Engineer. The general title: provisioning, automation and maintenance of Azure environments.
- Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, Azure. Migration projects and architecture decisions for enterprise estates. The $134,050 band.
- Cloud Engineer, Azure / M365 / Infrastructure. Read the split before applying, for the reasons above.
- Azure Cloud Specialist. Frequently public sector, and frequently clearance-gated. See our cybersecurity analyst guide for how clearances actually work.
- Cloud and Systems Administrator, Azure focus. Administration with migration work attached. A genuine route in, priced as administration.
- Azure DevOps Engineer. Pipelines and delivery on Azure DevOps or GitHub. See our DevOps engineer guide.
Skills That Keep Recurring in Listings
- Core Azure — virtual machines, storage, virtual networks, and the governance layer enterprises care about.
- Entra ID and hybrid identity, the most underrated line in these advertisements.
- Microsoft 365 administration, present in a large share of postings. Know whether you are taking it on.
- Networking fundamentals — DNS, VPN, ExpressRoute, firewalls — because the on-premise side does not disappear.
- Infrastructure as code, Terraform or Bicep, and PowerShell for everything Microsoft.
- Compliance and governance, weighted more heavily here than in AWS-native shops.
- Multi-cloud exposure, usually Azure plus AWS, which enterprises increasingly ask for outright.
- Cost management — last on their list, first on your promotion case.
Where the Jobs Are
Postings cluster in financial and enterprise centres including New York, Jersey City, Nashville and Charlotte, and in government-adjacent markets such as Chantilly and the wider Northern Virginia corridor. Azure's enterprise base means the geography follows old industry rather than the technology hubs.
A growing share of Azure engineering roles past entry level are advertised as fully remote, some noting only occasional on-site visits. Public sector and clearance-gated work is the exception. Expect an on-call rotation on most infrastructure teams, and ask how often it comes round and whether it is paid.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do Azure cloud engineers make in the USA?
Published averages disagree sharply — $169,202 from Glassdoor and $145,221 from Salary.com for the same title, $23,981 apart. Neither is a measurement. The federal medians for the occupations this work is counted under are $99,130, $134,050 and $135,980.
Do I need AZ-104 before AZ-305?
Yes. Microsoft requires the Azure Administrator Associate certification before awarding the Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential. AZ-400 requires either the Administrator or the Developer Associate. AZ-500 is associate level and has no certification prerequisite.
Which Azure certification should I start with?
AZ-104. It is the foundation of the path, it is the exam most Azure postings actually name, and both Expert certifications are gated behind it or its developer equivalent.
Why do so many Azure jobs mention Microsoft 365?
Because the same vendor sells both, so the same team usually owns both. It is real work, but it is counted and paid as administration rather than engineering. Ask what proportion of the week it takes up before you accept.
Is Azure or AWS better for getting a job in the USA?
AWS carries the larger overall share of postings; Azure is stronger inside enterprises already committed to Microsoft, and in a lot of government-adjacent work. Match the platform to the employers you are actually targeting, and go deep in one.
What is the entry-level Azure cloud engineer salary?
Junior roles are advertised from around $79,800, often with a cost-of-living adjustment in expensive cities. That sits above the $62,640 tenth percentile for the administrator occupation this work is counted under.
Are Azure cloud engineer jobs remote?
Many are past entry level, some with occasional on-site visits. Public sector and clearance-gated roles are much less likely to be remote.
Can I move into Azure engineering from Windows systems administration?
It is the most common route there is. Active Directory, Windows Server and networking experience transfers directly into hybrid identity work, which is the part of the job that is hardest to learn from scratch.
