Before anything else, a warning about every other article you will read on this subject.

We checked the salary figures that circulate for this role. They come from job adverts that closed in November and December 2025. Every one of the Rozee listings behind them now says the employer is no longer accepting CVs. Worse, on all three, Rozee's own salary badge contradicts the number written in the advert body.

So this guide does something simple instead: every figure below is from a named employer, on a listing that was live when we checked on 22 September 2026, with the date attached. When these expire, you will be able to tell.

What a WordPress SEO Assistant Actually Does

There is a clean line between this role and the one below it. A content uploader executes; an SEO assistant decides.

The uploader is handed a title tag and types it in. You are the person who chose that title tag, and who can explain why. Day to day that means:

• Keyword research and, more importantly, mapping keywords to pages so two of your own pages do not compete for the same search.
• On-page work: titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, internal linking.
• Technical checks: indexing, XML sitemaps, canonicals, redirects, broken links, mobile usability.
• Search Console and GA4: watching what actually happened, not what a plugin predicted.
• Reporting, usually weekly, in language a client understands.
• Speed and Core Web Vitals support, alongside whoever owns the code.

What Pakistani Employers Are Really Advertising

Here is what was live when we checked. Note how wide it is, and note that the biggest jump is not seniority but whether the client is local or overseas.

Two things that table teaches you, and neither is the headline number.

First, plenty of employers publish nothing. Folio3 is a large company advertising a senior role with no figure at all. Any article claiming to know "the market rate" is working from the self-selected minority who chose to publish.

Second, look at the night shifts. Three of these are night-shift roles because the clients are in the US or UK. That is the real trade in this job, and it belongs in your decision.

The Number That Changes Everything

Now the comparison nobody in the local market wants to put in front of you. On the official WordPress job board, a live listing from Dealer Lux for a remote Web Content Associate states:

"$600-$800 USD per month depending on experience" · "Full-time contractor remote position" · "Paid every two weeks through Wise" · "Clockify for time tracking. No screenshot or screen-recording monitoring"

That is roughly PKR 170,000 to 225,000 a month for work that overlaps heavily with the local roles paying PKR 40,000 to 60,000.

We are not telling you overseas contracts are easy to get. We are telling you that the gap between local employment and remote contracting in this field is roughly four times, and that this should shape which one you spend your applications on. Build the local experience if you need it. Do not mistake it for the ceiling.

"Remote" Does Not Mean Open to Pakistan

Read this before you spend a week on applications.

On that same WordPress job board, a role from GeniusXLab is tagged Remote and states: "This role is open only to U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders). GeniusXLab does not provide visa sponsorship for this position."

Meanwhile WPMU DEV, on the same board, writes: "Our talented, inspirational team is located globally, with team members working from every continent. Location is unimportant as long as you are available and enthusiastic."

Same tag. Opposite meaning. Always search the listing for the words "citizen", "eligible to work", "authorised" and "sponsorship" before applying.

About That Official WordPress Job Board

It is real and it is free to post on, but manage your expectations. When we checked, jobs.wordpress.net carried 10 open positions worldwide, across three categories: Development 6, Support 3, Plugin Development 1.

Two things follow. There is no SEO category on the board at all — its eleven categories are Contributor, Design, Development, General, Migration, Performance, Plugin Development, Support, Theme Customization, Translation and Writing. And listings expire after 21 days, so any count, including ours, is a snapshot.

It is still worth using, for a reason most people miss. The board's own FAQ says:

"The best way to get noticed by employers in the WordPress space is through your WordPress.org profile, which includes a dedicated jobs section where you can mark yourself as open to work, list your job history, and highlight your key WordPress accomplishments."

That is a free, permanent, employer-facing profile most applicants never create. Around 2,284 people currently have the Open to Work toggle on. Be one of them.

For actual SEO vacancies, you will get further on agency careers pages and Pakistani boards. One live example worth naming: WPRobo, a UK-registered agency with a Lahore office, had an SEO Specialist role open on its careers page, posted 24 May 2026, mid level at two to five years, salary discussed at the intro call, naming Search Console, GA4, Ahrefs and AIOSEO Pro. One agency is not a market, but it shows what a real listing asks for.

The Skills, Honestly Ranked

WordPress side

Dashboard fluency, Gutenberg, pages and posts, categories and tags, menus, themes and plugins, the media library, and enough HTML to open the code view and see what broke. Elementor is worth adding once a listing asks for it.

SEO side

Keyword research and search intent, on-page optimisation, internal linking, metadata, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps, redirects, broken-link checks, schema basics, mobile usability and Core Web Vitals.

The tools, and what you actually need

The two SEO plugins you will meet, with their current WordPress.org figures: Yoast SEO at over 10 million active installs and Rank Math at over 4 million. Both have genuine free versions and both sell a premium tier. Learn one properly; the second takes an afternoon.

Google Search Console is the one non-negotiable tool, and it is free. It is the only source that tells you what Google actually did with your pages. GA4 is second. Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz and Screaming Frog appear on listings, but they are paid and an employer will normally provide a seat — do not let a paywall stop you applying.

Core Web Vitals: Get These Three Right

This is the fastest way to tell whether an article on this subject is current. The three metrics and their official thresholds are:

• LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — 2.5 seconds or less.
• INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — 200 milliseconds or less.
• CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — 0.1 or less.

If a guide or a job advert still mentions FID, it is out of date. INP replaced First Input Delay as a stable Core Web Vital in 2024. Knowing this in an interview is a small thing that signals you read current sources.

One more detail worth carrying: these are measured at the 75th percentile of page loads, split by mobile and desktop. "My page loads in two seconds" is not the same claim.

Do You Need Experience? The Honest Answer

Live listings cluster at either 2+ years or essentially zero, with very little between. The genuine zero-to-one-year openings are internships, frequently night shift, at PKR 10,000 to 50,000.

So if you read that "1 to 2 years gets you a salaried SEO role", treat it with suspicion. The realistic sequence is: build a portfolio, take an internship or a small client, reach two years, then the PKR 50,000-plus and remote roles open up.

Building a Portfolio That Gets You Past Two Years of Experience

Two or three projects, documented properly. What separates a convincing portfolio from a common one is that you show the work and the measurement, not a claim.

1. A homepage optimised for one target keyword, with your reasoning written down.
2. A blog post with optimised headings, metadata, internal links and image alt text.
3. A technical checklist covering indexing, sitemap, redirects and broken links, with what you found and fixed.
4. A before-and-after page speed or Core Web Vitals result, with the numbers.
5. A short Search Console performance report explaining what changed and what you would do next.

Do not claim ranking improvements you did not measure. An interviewer who knows SEO will ask how you attributed it, and a vague answer costs more than never making the claim.

Free Training That Is Genuinely Free

Three things worth knowing before you spend money:

• Learn WordPress (learn.wordpress.org) is free and official, and includes SEO lessons such as "How to improve your SEO rankings" and "How to use headings for accessibility and SEO" inside its Beginner and Intermediate user courses. Note there is no standalone SEO course there.
• Google Analytics Academy on Skillshop offers free GA4 courses and a free certification.
• There is no official Google SEO certification. Google publishes an SEO Starter Guide but does not certify anyone as an SEO. If a training provider sells you a "Google SEO certification", that is not what you are buying.

Getting Paid From Pakistan

This is where people actually get stuck, and where most articles give advice that will waste your afternoon at a bank.

You will almost always be a contractor, not an employee. No paid leave, no notice period, no statutory protections. Price accordingly.

The correct account is an Exporters' Special Foreign Currency Account. The State Bank of Pakistan's framework for freelancers' accounts allows freelancers to open an ESFCA alongside a normal PKR account, in person or digitally, and permits proceeds to be processed on a self-declaration basis where no formal export contract exists — which is the usual situation for a freelancer.

The common mistake to avoid: a Roshan Digital Account is not for you. The RDA is for non-resident Pakistanis. If you live in Pakistan and freelance for a foreign client, you are not eligible, no matter how many articles recommend it.

Register with PSEB, because it changes your tax rate. PSEB now operates its web presence under the Pakistan Tech Destination brand, so the old pseb.org.pk links redirect. Registration is at portal.techdestination.com, helpline 0800-01010. Registered IT and ITeS exporters are taxed on export receipts at a materially lower final rate than unregistered ones, and the unregistered deduction is adjustable rather than final. Confirm the current fee and the current rates with PSEB and the FBR directly — both change, and we would rather you check than trust a blog, including this one.

On payment rails: PayPal is still not available in Pakistan. Payoneer remains the mainstream route. Agree in writing who absorbs the transfer and conversion fees, because "we pay in USD" is not the same as "you receive USD".

How to Spot a Fake SEO Job

Entry-level remote roles attract fraud because the applicants are new and hard to insure against. The patterns:

• Any request for money — registration, training, software, "security deposit". A real employer pays you, never the reverse.
• A large unpaid "test". Here is the useful contrast: WPMU DEV, a legitimate employer, runs assessment tasks and then a four to six week paid trial before a permanent offer. That is what real looks like. Ten unpaid articles is not.
• Overpayment and refund requests. You are sent too much and asked to return the difference; the original payment then reverses.
• Hiring entirely on WhatsApp or Telegram, from a Gmail address, with no company website and no named person.
• Credentials requested before a contract exists. Never hand over your own account logins.

One specific to SEO: be careful what you are asked to build. If the "SEO work" is spam pages, hidden links, or link schemes on a private blog network, you are the one whose name is on the account when the site is penalised. Walk away.

Where to report in Pakistan: cybercrime is now handled by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency, whose complaint portal is at complaint.nccia.gov.pk. The FIA Cyber Crime Wing that older articles point to was superseded. Verify the portal in your browser before relying on it.

How to Apply

1. Create your WordPress.org profile and switch on Open to Work. Free, permanent, and almost nobody does it.
2. Build the portfolio first. Two years of experience can be substituted with evidence; it cannot be substituted with adjectives.
3. Write a CV that names tools: WordPress, Gutenberg, Yoast or Rank Math, Search Console, GA4, keyword research, internal linking, basic HTML. Never list a tool you have not used.
4. Check the listing for citizenship restrictions before you write a cover letter.
5. Apply to remote and local in parallel, knowing the pay gap between them.
6. Prepare for practical questions: how you would optimise a new page, find a keyword, diagnose an indexing problem, fix broken internal links, or read a Search Console report.
7. Sort out payment and tax registration before your first overseas invoice, not after.

The realistic ladder, based on what live listings actually ask for:

Content uploader → SEO assistant → SEO specialist (2–4 years) → senior SEO executive (5 years plus).

Two branches open along the way. If you enjoy the technical side, technical SEO and web performance pay well and overlap with development. If you enjoy the content side, content SEO and strategy lead toward managing writers and calendars rather than pages.
