AWS Cloud Engineer — Commercial and GovCloud Platform Teams, US Employers

Technology companies, banks, health systems, retailers and government contractors across the United States hire AWS cloud engineers to build and run the infrastructure their applications sit on. AWS carries the largest share of US cloud postings, which means both the widest choice of employers and the deepest applicant pool.

What the work involves

Designing and provisioning AWS environments, writing the Terraform or CloudFormation that defines them, building the pipelines that deploy into them, and owning what happens when something breaks at three in the morning. Beyond that: IAM design, VPC and network boundaries, and keeping the monthly bill defensible.

Requirements

• Real operational experience — systems you have run under load, not only built
• Core AWS in depth: EC2, S3, VPC, IAM and Lambda, with EKS on container-heavy teams
• Infrastructure as code, most often Terraform, treated as software rather than as scripts
• Containers and orchestration, and an understanding of what they cost to run
• CI/CD pipelines, and enough Python or Bash to automate anything done twice
• IAM policy design, which is where most cloud incidents actually begin

How the pay is structured

• There is no federal figure for this title. The work is counted across network and computer systems administrators at a $99,130 median, computer network architects at $134,050, and software developers at $135,980
• Which of those the role resembles sets the band more than the letters AWS do: running an estate pays like administration, designing one pays like architecture, building platform software pays like development
• GovCloud and cleared roles pay a premium because the eligible pool is small

Before you apply

Check which bar a federal posting is setting. AWS GovCloud (US) requires the account holder to be a US Person, which includes lawful permanent residents. A security clearance is a separate and higher bar: it requires US citizenship and an employer willing to sponsor it. A posting that asks only for GovCloud experience is open to a wider group than one that asks for an active clearance.

Ask who owns the AWS bill. If nobody does, you will inherit it in month three without the authority to change anything.
