Database Administrator Jobs in USA

Database Administrator Jobs in USA

Database administration is one of the better-paid ways into American IT, and one of the worst-described. The salary range in general circulation misses both ends of the real one, the growth figure is roughly double what the Bureau of Labor Statistics actually projects, and the certification most guides still tell you to take was withdrawn more than two years ago. This page fixes those three things first, because each of them costs a reader either money or time.

The Certification Guides Still Recommend Was Retired in 2024

Nearly every database administrator careers page lists three certifications worth holding, and one of them is AWS Certified Database – Specialty. You cannot take it. AWS retired it, and the last day the exam was offered was 29 April 2024.

Two details matter beyond the retirement itself:

  • AWS has not named a replacement. Its retirement announcement points to no successor database certification, and the current certification list contains none with "Database" in the title at any level. Any guide telling you what AWS "now recommends instead" is filling in a gap AWS left empty.
  • If you already hold it, it stays valid. AWS keeps earned credentials active for three years from the date they were awarded, so an existing holder has not lost anything — but it cannot be renewed by re-sitting.

Do not substitute the similarly named AWS Certified Data Engineer – Associate without thinking. It exists, it costs $150, and it is aimed at data engineers building pipelines rather than administrators keeping production databases alive. It is a different job.

The Microsoft route is intact. Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate is current, and its exam is DP-300, Administering Microsoft Azure SQL Solutions. There is a trap in how Microsoft keeps it alive that catches people every year:

  • The certification is valid for twelve months, not three years.
  • Renewal is free, online and unproctored through Microsoft Learn — but only in the six months before it expires.
  • Let it lapse and you retake the full exam. Put the renewal window in your calendar the day you pass.

Microsoft does not publish one global price for DP-300; the fee depends on the country the exam is proctored in, so check your own before budgeting.

Three more corrections worth having before you spend anything:

  • Oracle's certification has been rebranded. What guides still call "Oracle Certified Professional" for the database is now published as Oracle AI Database Administration Certified Professional, sat as exam 1Z0-183, with 1Z0-182 at associate level. The older Oracle Database Administration 2019 track, exams 1Z0-082 and 1Z0-083, is still listed. Searching the old name will not find the current page.
  • Google has a database certification the guides omit. Professional Cloud Database Engineer is current and costs $200 for a two-hour exam. Google's own page notes it is being updated to reflect product branding changes — an update, not a retirement.
  • There is no official PostgreSQL certification. The PostgreSQL Global Development Group issues none; every "PostgreSQL certification" on sale is a commercial third party's, and EnterpriseDB has renamed its own catalogue to the EDB Postgres AI family. For MongoDB the current credentials are Associate Database Administrator and Associate Atlas Administrator, and IBM still offers Db2 v12.1 and Db2 13 for z/OS administrator certifications.

The Salary Range in Circulation Describes Only the Middle

The usual figure is "$75,000 to $120,000 a year". Here is what BLS measured across 69,990 database administrators in May 2025:

  • 10th percentile — $60,230
  • 25th percentile — $79,610
  • Median — $104,620
  • 75th percentile — $135,460
  • 90th percentile — $163,320

So a quarter of database administrators earn less than $79,610, below the published floor, and a quarter earn more than $135,460, above the published ceiling. The circulated band covers the middle half and presents it as the whole occupation. The mean is $110,090, or $52.93 an hour.

The $126,760 Figure Is a Different Job

You will also see $126,760 quoted as the database administrator median. It is a real BLS number, but it is not this occupation. It is the Occupational Outlook Handbook's figure for the combined group, Database Administrators and Architects, and those two roles are far apart:

  • Database administrators — median $104,620, 69,990 employed. Keeping systems running, recoverable and secure.
  • Database architects — median $139,500, 67,140 employed, with a 90th percentile of $204,000. Designing the data models and platforms the administrators then run.

A $34,880 gap sits between those medians, and the two are advertised under overlapping titles. Before you negotiate, work out which one the job description actually describes: if it is dominated by schema design, platform selection and data strategy, you are looking at the architect market and should be paid from it.

For context in the same BLS release, network and computer systems administrators sit at a $99,130 median and software developers at $135,980.

"Growing Demand" Is Four Per Cent

Every guide describes this field as growing fast on the back of cloud, AI and big data. The projection says something quieter.

  • Projected growth 2025 to 2035: 4 per cent, which BLS itself labels "about as fast as the average".
  • Average for all occupations over the same decade: 3.5 per cent. So the margin is half a percentage point.
  • Net change: about 6,500 jobs across ten years, on a base of 144,500.
  • Openings: about 7,300 a year. More openings appear every single year than the decade adds in total, because almost all of them replace people who retire or move on.

And the comparison that matters most if you are choosing a specialism: the wider computer and mathematical occupations group is projected to grow 7.3 per cent, close to double. Database administration is a stable, well-paid, steadily replacing occupation — not an expanding one. That is still a good place to work. It is not the boom the brochures describe, and you should plan a specialism accordingly.

Where the Money Actually Is

By average annual pay, the leading states are Massachusetts at $126,790, Maryland at $126,510, New Jersey at $125,070, Washington at $122,310, California at $121,500 and Utah at $121,270. At the other end sit West Virginia at $79,460, Maine at $79,880 and Wyoming at $83,630 — a spread of roughly $47,000 for the same job title.

Among metropolitan areas, San Jose at $145,150, San Francisco at $134,720, Seattle at $131,460, Boston at $130,100, Baltimore at $126,020 and New York at $125,550 are among the highest paying.

Industry matters as much as geography, and this is where the usual advice goes wrong. Guides name finance, healthcare and tech as the best payers. Two of those hold up; one does not:

  • Securities and commodity contracts — $133,100. Finance genuinely leads.
  • Aerospace products and parts manufacturing — $131,290.
  • Computer systems design — $124,290, and the single largest employer of database administrators at 10,430 posts.
  • Credit intermediation — $124,210, and scientific research and development — $122,780.
  • Hospitals — $107,630, and ambulatory health care — $98,000. Both sit below the occupation's $110,090 mean, so healthcare is a pay cut for this role, not a premium.
  • Colleges and universities — $96,620. Education pays least of the major employers.

The Rules You Will Actually Be Held To

Job descriptions list HIPAA and GDPR almost as decoration. Knowing which regime genuinely binds your employer is a real interview advantage, because most candidates get this wrong.

  • HIPAA does not apply to every US company. It binds covered entities — health plans, health care clearinghouses, and providers who transmit health information electronically in connection with a standard transaction — and their business associates. A database administrator at a general US employer is outside it unless the employer is one of those, or contracted as a business associate.
  • GDPR is EU law, Regulation (EU) 2016/679. Under Article 3(2) it reaches an employer with no EU establishment only where the processing relates to offering goods or services to people in the EU, or monitoring their behaviour in the EU. Merely holding records about EU citizens does not trigger it.
  • The CCPA, as amended by the CPRA, is the one most US database administrators will actually meet. A for-profit doing business in California is covered if it clears any one of three thresholds: annual gross revenue over $26,625,000, buying, selling or sharing the personal information of 100,000 or more California consumers or households, or drawing 50 per cent or more of its revenue from selling or sharing that information. The revenue figure is inflation-adjusted in odd-numbered years, so it changes again on 1 January 2027.
  • SOX — the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, Public Law 107-204 — is what puts change control and audit trails around databases behind financial reporting, through its section 404 internal control requirements.
  • PCI DSS is not a law. It is a standard set by the PCI Security Standards Council for everyone involved in payment card processing, currently at version 4.0.1. Calling it legislation in an interview is a tell.

On Remote Work, an Honest Answer

Guides state that remote and on-site database administrator roles are both widely available. That may well be true, but BLS publishes no telework rate for this occupation. Its telework tables stop at broad groups such as computer and mathematical occupations, and the Occupational Outlook Handbook says only that most database administrators and architects work full time.

So treat any specific remote percentage you see for this job as an estimate from job-board postings rather than a measurement, and settle the question for your own role by asking about the on-call rotation and the maintenance windows, which are what actually tie a database administrator to a schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do database administrators earn in the USA?

The median is $104,620 a year and the mean $110,090, or $52.93 an hour. A quarter earn under $79,610 and a quarter over $135,460, with the 10th percentile at $60,230 and the 90th at $163,320 (BLS, May 2025).

Why do some sites say database administrators earn $126,760?

Because that is the Occupational Outlook Handbook figure for the combined Database Administrators and Architects group. Administrators alone have a median of $104,620; architects have $139,500.

Is the AWS Certified Database Specialty still available?

No. AWS retired it and the last day the exam was offered was 29 April 2024. AWS named no replacement. Credentials already earned stay active for three years from the date they were awarded.

Which database certification is worth taking now?

Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, exam DP-300, is current, as is Google's Professional Cloud Database Engineer at $200. Oracle's track is now called Oracle AI Database Administration Certified Professional, exam 1Z0-183. Note that the Microsoft credential is valid for twelve months and renews free online only during the six months before it expires.

Is database administration a growing field?

Modestly. Employment is projected to grow 4 per cent from 2025 to 2035 against 3.5 per cent for all occupations, adding about 6,500 jobs while producing roughly 7,300 openings a year, mostly from replacement. The wider computer and mathematical group grows 7.3 per cent.

Do you need a degree to become a database administrator?

BLS records the typical entry-level education as a bachelor's degree, and lists no on-the-job training for the occupation. Employers do accept equivalent experience, but the degree is the documented norm rather than the exception.

Which states and industries pay database administrators the most?

Massachusetts at $126,790, Maryland at $126,510, New Jersey at $125,070, Washington at $122,310 and California at $121,500. By industry, securities and commodity contracts at $133,100 and computer systems design at $124,290 lead, while hospitals at $107,630 pay below the occupational mean.

Does a US database administrator need to know HIPAA and GDPR?

Only where they apply. HIPAA binds covered entities and their business associates; GDPR reaches a US employer only through Article 3(2) targeting or monitoring. The CCPA as amended by the CPRA, SOX section 404 and the PCI DSS standard are more commonly relevant.
