What the work involves

Finding, reading and summarising sources, then recording what you found in a form somebody else can use. In a university or clinical setting that means literature searches, participant records and protocol paperwork. On a commercial desk it means company and contact research feeding a sales or recruitment pipeline. The two are very different jobs sharing one label.

This title is not an official occupation

No code in the US Standard Occupational Classification is titled "research assistant" or "online research assistant". The nearest is 19-4061 Social Science Research Assistants, where the phrase appears only as an informal alternate title. Treat any advert that quotes national averages for "online research assistant" as unsourced.

Check the advert before you send a CV

Confirm the host resolves and is not a stray subdomain of an unrelated business. Confirm a real application form exists — a comment box is not one. Confirm a company name that can be found somewhere else. "Competitive compensation based on project completion" is not a pay figure, and a role with no stated employer and no stated pay is not a role.

Before you accept

Ask which of the two jobs it is, and what the output actually is: a literature summary, a spreadsheet of companies, or a list of contacts. Ask who checks the work and against what. Confirm the country the employer will hire from, because a remote listing is frequently restricted to one.
