Full Stack Developer Jobs in USA

Full Stack Developer Jobs in USA

Full stack is the most commercially useful title in web engineering and the most slippery one to price. Employers like it because one person can carry a feature from the interface to the database. Developers like it because it opens more postings than either specialism alone. But it is not an occupation anyone official tracks, and that single fact explains why every salary figure you will read for it disagrees with every other one. This guide sorts that out first, then covers the part most guides get wrong: what actually happens when a US company hires you from abroad.

"Full Stack" Is a Title, Not an Occupation — and That Decides Your Pay

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track full stack developers. It tracks two neighbouring occupations, and employers use this one title for roles in both:

  • Web developers — a $92,650 median as of May 2025, from under $48,100 at the tenth percentile to over $162,290 at the ninetieth
  • Software developers — a $135,980 median, from under $82,460 to over $214,670

Roughly $43,000 of median separates them, and the job title on the advertisement will not tell you which one you are being hired into. That is the most valuable thing on this page. A "full stack developer" building marketing sites and a CMS integration is being paid from the first band. A "full stack developer" owning services, data models and deployment for a product is being paid from the second. Same two words, two different careers.

How to tell before you apply: read the balance of the job description rather than the title. Count what it asks you to own. If the back end appears as "familiarity with APIs" while the front end has six bullet points, it is a front-end role and it will pay like one. If it names data modelling, service boundaries, queues or scale, it is the other band. Our guides to web developer jobs in the USA and software developer jobs in the USA cover each occupation in full, including how to move between them.

What the bands look like in practice

  • Entry level: $70,000 to $95,000, wider at the bottom outside major metros and at agencies
  • Mid-level, two to five years: $95,000 to $135,000, straddling both medians
  • Senior: $140,000 to $215,000 — and note that most guides stop at $180,000, which sits below where the top tenth of software developers actually begins
  • Freelance and contract: $40 to $100+ an hour, which is not salary-comparable until you subtract self-employment tax and unpaid time

Stack Choice Is a Pay Decision

Within the same seniority, which stack you carry changes what you are worth, because it changes which industries can hire you.

  • MERN and MEAN (MongoDB, Express, React or Angular, Node) dominate startups, agencies and product companies. The most postings, the most competition, and the fastest to learn.
  • Java with Spring Boot plus React or Angular is the enterprise stack — banking, fintech, insurance, healthcare and large enterprise software. Fewer job titles, more of them permanent, and generally better paid at the same level, because the employers are regulated and the systems are long-lived.
  • .NET with Angular occupies similar ground in enterprise and government-adjacent work.

If you are early and choosing what to learn next, MERN gets you hired sooner and Java or .NET gets you paid more later. Neither answer is wrong; know which trade you are making.

Getting the First Full Stack Role

Full stack is unusually kind to juniors, because the portfolio can prove both halves at once and a deployed project is undeniable in a way a certificate is not.

  • Build one application, not five demos. Something with real authentication, a real data model, and a real deployment. A single working product with a README explaining your trade-offs beats a row of tutorial clones, which reviewers recognise instantly.
  • Deploy it and leave it running. A live URL plus a readable commit history is the strongest evidence a junior can offer, because it proves you finish things.
  • Learn the boundary, not just the ends. Most junior full stack failures are at the seam: authentication, API error handling, and what happens when a request fails halfway. Being good there marks you out.
  • Apply to junior and associate titles specifically, and to new grad programmes at larger employers, which open on a predictable annual cycle.

Freelance and Contract Full Stack Work

US startups and small businesses hire freelance full stack developers constantly, mostly for MVP builds, e-commerce work, API integrations and ongoing maintenance. It is one of the more reliable freelance niches because the work recurs: whoever built it usually keeps it running.

The rate is not a salary. You owe the federal self-employment tax of 15.3% if you are US-based, file on Schedule C, receive 1099-NEC forms, and make quarterly estimated payments — 15 April, 15 June, 15 September and 15 January — once you expect to owe more than $1,000. Add unpaid time between contracts, scoping calls, and the maintenance requests that arrive after a project is "finished". Fix the scope, the revision limit and the maintenance terms in writing before you start.

Working for a US Company From Abroad: What Really Happens

This is where most articles on the subject sell something that is not true, so it is worth being precise. The usual promise is US-level pay without needing visa sponsorship. The visa part is right. The pay part usually is not.

Pay is almost always localised

The reason a US company hires internationally is generally cost. Most benchmark the offer to the market where you live rather than to San Francisco or New York, and the gap can be very large. That does not make the work a bad deal — it is frequently far above local rates and paid in a stronger currency — but go in expecting a local-plus offer rather than a US one, and treat anyone promising US parity as someone who has not done this before. Ask directly how the range was benchmarked.

Contractor or employer of record — they are not the same thing

You will be engaged one of two ways, and it changes everything about your position:

  • Independent contractor, paid directly or through a contractor platform. You invoice, you handle your own tax in your own country, and you have no employment protections, no paid leave, no notice period and no severance.
  • Through an employer of record — Deel, Papaya Global and similar. The EOR is a legal employer in your country, so you become a real employee there, with local statutory benefits, local payroll and local protections, while working for the US company day to day.

If a role is long-term and full-time in substance, the EOR route is materially better for you, and it is reasonable to ask for it.

The misclassification problem, and why it is not only the company's problem

Here is the part nobody mentions. Whether you are genuinely a contractor is decided under the labour law of the country you live in, not US law, and the tests look at how much control the company has over you, whether you work set hours, how integrated you are into their core business, and how long the relationship has run. A single client, full-time hours, their tools, their processes, for two years, is precisely the pattern that gets reclassified as employment.

When that happens the company can owe back taxes, statutory benefits and penalties under your country's law — which is why some employers end an arrangement abruptly once it is flagged rather than convert it. For you that means an income stream that can stop without notice and without any of the protections an employee would have had. It is a reason to prefer an EOR for anything long-term, to keep more than one client if you are genuinely freelancing, and to keep your own tax affairs in order in your own country from the first invoice.

On the practical side of getting paid across borders — which routes work, which withhold, and what the fees actually are — our guide to remote jobs with no experience covers international payment routes in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do full stack developers make in the USA?

It depends which occupation the role really is. BLS puts web developers at a $92,650 median and software developers at $135,980, and the full stack title is used for both. In practice, entry level runs $70,000 to $95,000, mid-level $95,000 to $135,000, and senior $140,000 to $215,000.

Why do full stack salary figures vary so much?

Because full stack is a job title rather than a tracked occupation, so published figures are averaging two different bands about $43,000 apart at the median. Read the balance of the job description rather than the title to tell which one an advertisement belongs to.

Which stack pays best for full stack roles in the US?

Java with Spring Boot plus React or Angular generally pays above a JavaScript-only stack at the same seniority, because it is the stack of banking, fintech, insurance and large enterprise. MERN has more openings and less competition for your attention while learning.

Can I work for a US company without a visa?

Yes, as a contractor or through an employer of record, working from your own country. You are taxed where you live rather than in the US, and you receive no US benefits or employment protections.

Will a US company pay me US rates if I work remotely from abroad?

Usually not. Most benchmark the offer to your local market rather than to US pay, and the difference can be large. It is often still well above local rates, but expect a local-plus offer and ask how the range was set.

What is an employer of record and should I want one?

An EOR such as Deel or Papaya Global legally employs you in your own country on the US company's behalf, so you get local payroll, statutory benefits and employment protections. For a long-term full-time role it is meaningfully better than a plain contractor arrangement, and worth asking for.

What is contractor misclassification and why does it matter to me?

Whether you are truly a contractor is judged under your own country's labour law, based on control, set hours, integration into the core business and how long the arrangement has run. A single client at full-time hours for years is the classic reclassification pattern, and companies often end such arrangements abruptly once flagged, leaving you with no notice and no protections.

Is full stack a good route for a first developer job?

Yes, because one deployed application can prove both halves at once. Build a single real product with authentication, a real data model and a live deployment rather than several tutorial clones.
