Full Stack Developer — US Product Teams, Startups and Consultancies

Startups, product teams, agencies and consultancies across the United States hire full stack developers to work across both the interface and the services behind it. Smaller companies favour the title because one person can carry a feature end to end; larger ones use it for platform and internal tooling teams.

What the work involves

Building features from the interface through to the API, the data model and the deployment, rather than handing off at a boundary. In practice that means React, Vue or Angular on one side, Node, Java, Python or .NET on the other, a relational or document database underneath, and enough infrastructure knowledge to ship and debug what you built. The breadth is real; so is the expectation that you will still be reviewed by specialists on each side.

Requirements

• A coherent stack rather than a list — MERN, Java with Spring Boot and React, or .NET with Angular are the combinations named most often in US postings
• REST API design, authentication, and how a request actually travels through your system
• SQL and at least one document store, plus enough data modelling to avoid painting yourself into a corner
• Git, testing, and a working understanding of deployment and cloud basics on AWS or Azure
• A portfolio of deployed work showing both halves; for juniors this substitutes for experience more readily than in most engineering roles
• A bachelor's degree is the typical stated requirement, and it carries more weight where sponsorship is involved

How the pay is structured

• Where the role sits decides the band. Full stack is not a tracked occupation: BLS puts web developers at a $92,650 median and software developers at $135,980, and this title is used for both
• Stack matters. Java with Spring Boot in banking, fintech and insurance generally pays above a JavaScript-only stack at the same seniority
• Total compensation at larger employers adds bonus and equity on top of base

Before you apply

Ask which half you will actually own. Many "full stack" roles are front-end roles with occasional API work, priced at the front-end band. The job description's balance, not the title, tells you which one this is.
