Java Developer — US Enterprise, Banking and Consulting Teams

Java runs the systems that large US organisations cannot afford to rewrite: core banking, insurance policy administration, claims, payments, telecom billing and government-adjacent platforms. That is why demand for Java developers is steady rather than fashionable, and why so much of it is bought through staffing and consulting firms rather than hired directly.

What the work involves

Building and maintaining backend services in Java, most often on Spring Boot; designing and consuming REST APIs; working against relational databases and the occasional message queue; carrying older code forward without breaking anything that clears money at four in the morning. On a modernisation programme, the work is decomposing a monolith into services without an outage.

Requirements

• Core Java in depth — collections, concurrency, memory behaviour, exception handling, and the differences between recent LTS releases
• Spring and Spring Boot, which appear on the overwhelming majority of US Java postings
• SQL and a real understanding of transactions, indexes and query plans; Hibernate or JPA is commonly requested
• REST API design, plus messaging such as Kafka or JMS on higher-band roles
• Cloud platform experience — AWS, Azure or GCP — increasingly expected rather than a bonus
• Testing with JUnit, plus Git, Maven or Gradle, and CI you can debug

How the pay is structured

• Salaried roles sit in the BLS software developer occupation: a $135,980 median as of May 2025, with the highest tenth above $214,670
• Contract roles are quoted as an hourly rate, commonly $50 to $90 and higher for specialised work. An hourly rate is not comparable to a salary until you subtract unpaid time off, benefits and the employer's half of payroll taxes
