"Online research assistant" is one of the most searched remote job titles in Pakistan, and one of the least real. Three completely different things wear the label: a university and clinical job that is genuine and well paid, a commercial sales-support job that is genuine and ordinary, and a category of advertising that is not a job at all.
This guide separates them. Every figure below was read from an official source or from a listing's own page, and the claims that did not survive that check have been left out rather than hedged. For the commercial side of research work in detail, see B2B Lead Research Jobs.
The Title Is Not in the Official List
The US Standard Occupational Classification contains 867 detailed occupations. Not one of them is titled "research assistant", and certainly not "online research assistant". There is no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile for it either.
The nearest real code is 19-4061, Social Science Research Assistants. O*NET defines it as work that assists social scientists "in laboratory, survey, and other social science research", and explicitly excludes postsecondary teaching assistants. Its own list of reported job titles reads: Clinical Research Assistant, Graduate Assistant, Graduate Research Assistant, Research Aide, Research Assistant, Research Associate, Research Technician, Social Research Assistant.
Notice what is not in that list: anything remote, anything freelance, anything online. The official system sorts this work by what you do, not by who employs you or where you sit. A graduate research assistant is filed by primary duty — teaching goes to one code, research to another — never by employer type.
That matters because it means no national average exists for the job the adverts describe. When a listing quotes you a figure for "online research assistant", it did not come from a statistical agency. It came from somewhere else, and you should ask where.
What the Nearest Real Occupations Pay
These are the three closest codes where the figures are confirmed in both the official wage table and O*NET. The reference period is the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, released 15 May 2026.

Read these correctly or they will mislead you. They describe degree-holding staff employed in the United States, mostly on site, mostly full time. They are not a rate card for remote gig research, and quoting them to a client will not get you $29 an hour. What they are good for is showing where the skill leads if you stay in it: the ladder runs from assistant to survey researcher to analyst, and the analyst rung is worth roughly a quarter more than the assistant rung.
Two other codes get quoted in articles about this job — Statistical Assistants and Data Entry Keyers. We checked both and the sources disagreed with each other, so they are not published here.
We Checked the Most-Shared Advert for This Job. It Was Not a Job.
There is one advert for "Online Research Assistant (Flexible Time)" that circulates more than any other. It is worth walking through what it actually was, because the same machinery is still running under other addresses.
The host no longer exists. It returns NXDOMAIN — no address record at all — on both Google's and Cloudflare's public DNS. Clicking the link produces a browser error, not a page. The parent domain resolves normally, which tells you the subdomain specifically was removed.
It was never the publisher's page. The address was a subdomain of a well-known American military-news site whose owners had nothing to do with recruitment and nothing to do with this. Somebody took over an abandoned subdomain and built a fake job board on it. The archived copy carries a WordPress installation name belonging to neither the publisher nor any employer.
It impersonated Indeed. The archived page title ended with "- Indeed Jobs USA" and the footer read "© 2026 Indeed Jobs USA". Indeed had no connection to it whatsoever.
There was no way to apply. We parsed every link and every form in the archived page. The complete list of outbound links was the site's own homepage, a comment anchor, and the WordPress theme vendor. The only form on the page was a comment box. And yet the page instructed readers: "Submit your application via our online portal with your updated resume." There was no portal. There was a comment box that collects your name and email address.
There was no pay figure. The entire compensation section read: "Competitive compensation based on project completion and quality of work."
There was no real employer. The named company appears elsewhere, word for word, under a completely different company name registered to a different country. One job description, two employers, no address or registration number for either.
It was one page out of 627. The web archive's index for that subdomain holds 627 job-spam pages. Sorted by the brand each one impersonates:
- Amazon — 53 pages
- FedEx — 36 pages
- Disney — 25 pages
- UPS — 21 pages
- Walmart — 20 pages
- Apple — 19 pages
- Delta — 18 pages, American Airlines — 17 pages
And sorted by the promise in the web address: work-from-home on 155 pages, data-entry on 143, part-time on 132, entry-level on 82, no-experience on 80.
The same page existed on a second hijacked site. An identical listing, with the identical "Indeed Jobs USA" title, sat on an abandoned subdomain of a New York property-news publication. That subdomain is dead now too, while the publication itself is live. The same payload on two unrelated, legitimate media properties is not a coincidence — it is a campaign.
We could not follow what happened after somebody sent their CV, because the sites were taken down first. But the shape is familiar, and the next section is what the regulator says about it.
How to Check an Advert Before You Send Your CV
Every one of the signals below was visible on that page before anyone applied. None of them requires special tools.
- Read the part of the address before the first dot. If a jobs page lives at
get.somecompany.comand that company sells something other than recruitment, ask why. Hijacked subdomains of real businesses are the current favourite host for this, because they inherit the parent's search reputation. - Look for a brand the site has no right to use. "Indeed Jobs USA" is not Indeed. A page title or footer claiming a famous jobs brand, on a domain that is not that brand's domain, settles the question on its own.
- Find the application form and look at it. A real vacancy has an apply button that goes to an employer's system. A comment box, a bare email address, or an instruction to message on WhatsApp is not an application process.
- Demand a number. "Competitive compensation" and "based on quality of work" are not pay. A genuine employer will state a band, an hourly rate or a salary.
- Try to find the employer anywhere else. No registered address, no registration number, no other listing, no staff — that is a name, not a company.
- Search one full sentence of the job description in quotation marks. If the identical wording comes back under a different company, you are reading a template that gets refilled.
- Check the page still loads. A shared link that produces a DNS error means the operation has already been shut down once.
"Remote" Does Not Mean "Open to You"
A pay band circulates for this role of roughly R8,000 to R20,000 a month. Two things are wrong with it and both are worth knowing.
First, that R is the South African rand, not the rupee. Second, the listing it came from has been deleted, along with the recruiter's entire careers site. We found their current live advertisements, and the real bands are close to double the quoted figure: a data entry role at R23,000 to R25,000 a month, a data administrator role at R29,000 to R32,000.
But the decisive detail is in the listings' own wording. Each one says the role is for a UK-based employer, fully remote from South Africa. A Pakistani applicant cannot take these jobs at any salary. "Remote" in a job advert almost always carries a country attached to it — sometimes a tax or right-to-work reason, sometimes a working-hours one. Read the sentence before you spend an evening on the application.
What Is Actually Hiring in Pakistan
We went looking for this job by name on the two main Pakistani boards on 23 September 2026. The honest answer is that the title barely exists here, and the roles that do exist are not the job the adverts describe.
These category searches returned zero listings in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi alike: research assistant, research analyst, research associate, market research, academic writer. The board's "online research" category returns HTTP 410 Gone — it existed once and has been retired.
The broad "researcher" tag returns about 70 listings across those four cities (Lahore 34, Islamabad 19, Karachi 13, Rawalpindi 4). Reading all of them, roughly 65 are sales, business development, digital marketing or customer support jobs that were auto-tagged for using the word "research" once in a paragraph. Genuinely research-focused postings: about four.
Those four, with the details from their own pages:
- Clinical research assistant, Islamabad — PKR 100,000 to 250,000 a month, open to fresh graduates, morning shift, part remote with travel. Clinical trial coordination, participant records, protocol monitoring. Medical terminology required, no specific degree named. Posted 28 August 2026, closes 1 December 2026. This is the best-paid role in the entire set, and it is a health job, not an online one.
- Medical research writer, Karachi, remote — PKR 50,000 to 90,000 a month, under a year of experience, morning shift. Literature reviews of peer-reviewed medical sources. MBBS or MD preferred, but a biomedical or health-science background with research experience is accepted. Posted 1 September 2026 — note that it closed on 30 September 2026, so check for a repost rather than the original.
- Online research and lead generation executive, Lahore — PKR 30,000 to 40,000 a month, fresh graduate, morning shift, on site. Web research for prospects and candidates, sourcing from directories, CV formatting, data cleansing, CRM upkeep. Bachelor's required. This is the closest thing on either board to the literal phrase "online research", and it is a business-process outsourcing job.
- Lead generation assistant, Rawalpindi, part-time remote — PKR 20,000 to 30,000 a month, one year of experience, evening shift. Market research appears as one duty among many; the core of it is outreach.
The pattern is worth stating plainly, because it decides what you should train for. The two best-paid research jobs in Pakistan right now are clinical and medical. The ones that actually match the "online research" wording are commercial sales support, and they pay a third as much. If the medical route is open to you, it is the better one by a wide margin. One caution about the counts above. Both boards run their keyword search in the browser rather than on the server, which means a search that returns nothing has not proved anything. Company pages and individual listings are readable and reliable; search result pages are not. Treat "we found none" as "none found by this route".
What the Regulator Publishes About This Kind of Offer
The US Federal Trade Commission tracks fake job advertising directly, and its numbers give you the scale.
Reported losses to job and employment agency scams went from $90 million in 2020 to $501 million in 2024, with the number of reports tripling over the same period. Within that, a newer variety the FTC calls task scams grew from essentially nothing to 38.8% of all job-scam reports in the first half of 2024 alone. About 20,000 people reported one in those six months, against roughly 5,000 in the whole of 2023.
The FTC's own description of the mechanism: "Task scams ask you to do simple repetitive tasks such as liking videos or rating product images. Your 'job' is to complete these tasks in an app or online platform that creates the illusion you're racking up commissions with every click."
On how they start: "the scam typically starts with an unexpected text or WhatsApp message offering online work but no specifics."
Two rules the FTC states without qualification:
- "Never pay anyone to get paid, or to get a job. That's a sure sign of a scam."
- "Ignore generic and unexpected texts or WhatsApp messages about jobs. Real employers will never contact you that way."
One accuracy note, because you will see this claimed carelessly. The FTC does not name "research assistant" among the fake job types it tracks. The titles it does name are data entry clerk, virtual assistant, mystery shopper, appointment setter, and reshipping roles dressed up as "quality control manager" or "delivery operations specialist". Research assistant sits next door to those, not inside the list.
What the FTC does say about reshipping fits the 627-page board above exactly: scammers "lie about being affiliated with familiar companies like Amazon or FedEx". Those were the two most impersonated brands on it, 53 pages and 36 pages respectively.
What the Real Job Is Actually Like
Strip away the advertising and the work is narrower than it sounds. You are given a question, you find sources that answer it, and you record what you found in a format somebody else can act on. The skill being paid for is not searching. It is judging a source and recording it consistently, so that the person downstream does not have to check your work.
On the academic and clinical side that means literature searching in medical databases, reading papers you will not fully understand at first, keeping participant records accurate, and following a protocol exactly. On the commercial side it means confirming a company is real, finding who holds a role, and keeping a spreadsheet clean enough that a salesperson can work from it — the craft is covered in detail in B2B Lead Research Jobs.
Both versions reward the same three habits: writing down where every fact came from, saying "I could not confirm this" instead of guessing, and using the same format every time. Those are also what an employer tests for in a trial task.
How to Apply
Search the boards directly rather than following shared links. On Mustakbil, https://www.mustakbil.com/ is server-rendered and shows a salary band on most listings, which makes it the better place to calibrate what the work pays here. Search by the words that appear in real listings — "research assistant", "clinical research", "research writer", "lead generation" — rather than by "online research assistant", which the board has retired as a category.
On Rozee, open each listing and read its own posting date and closing date. A closed job there does not always redirect you away; it will also load the full page normally and put a line inside it saying the employer is no longer accepting CVs. A page that opens is not a page that is hiring.

Then search one full sentence of the description in quotation marks; if it comes back under a different company name, it is a template.
Are there online research assistant jobs in Pakistan?
Under that name, almost none. Of roughly 70 listings under the broad "researcher" tag, about four were genuinely research roles. Two were clinical or medical and two were commercial lead research.
Do I need a degree to work as a research assistant?
It depends which of the two jobs you mean. The clinical post we found was open to fresh graduates with no specific degree named, although it required knowledge of medical terminology. The medical writing role preferred MBBS or MD but accepted a biomedical or health-science background with research experience. Why do so many of these adverts say "flexible hours, no experience needed"?
Because those two phrases select for people who need work urgently and cannot easily check an employer. Note that they are also true of plenty of legitimate entry-level listings, so they are not proof of anything on their own. Judge the advert on whether it names an employer, states a pay figure and provides a real way to apply. Of the four genuine Pakistani listings we found, three accepted entry-level candidates and none advertised itself on flexibility.
